The Adrian T. Hazell Primary School is the winner of the 2016 Ashley & Sons cycling and road relays competition held on Sunday, March 6, outside the family’s business place in The Valley.

The event, now in its 22nd year, attracted a large and excited crowd as children from seven Primary Schools, and the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School, joined in what was a keen and highly-spirited competition.

In addition to the inter-houses of the Comprehensive School, there was participation from The Valley Primary School, the Orealia Kelly Primary School at Stoney Ground; the privately-run Central Christian School at Rey Hill; the Morris Vanterpool Primary School at East End; the Vivien Vanterpool Primary School at Island Harbour; the Adrian T. Hazell Primary School on the Blowing Point Road; and the Alwyn Allison Richardson Primary School at West End.

The events came just ahead of the heats and competitions of the various schools scheduled for this month, and served as good practice for practically all of the upcoming inter-school sporting activities.

Parliamentary Secretary, Sports, Mr. Cardigan Connor, expressed the appreciation of the Ministry and Department of Sports for their continued involvement in the cycling and road relays and of the sole sponsorship of Ashley & Sons of the annual event. He intimated that it was a great contribution to youth development in Anguilla and the commitment of the Brooks’ family to a community event started over two decades ago by the late Mr. Ashley Brooks.

Mr. Brooks’ daughter, Ms. Connie Brooks, Manager of the family’s business, commented that the athletic event was a challenging one, given its growth of participation over the years, but was a fine contribution to sports, youth affairs, and education in Anguilla. It was also a tribute to the role and fond memory of her father.
