A United States national, who was helped through college on a football scholarship, has grown so much to like the sport and the opportunities it provided him, that he is now helping others – including young Anguillian footballers.
He is Mr Cam Cameron of Detroit, Michigan, who donated 20 pairs of cleats (boots), valued at US $2,000, to the Anguilla Football Association for distribution to the youngsters. He made the presentation to Mr Raymond Guishard, President of the Association, on Sunday, February 2, in the Conference Room of the Football Stadium at the Webster Park Annex. Mr Cameron, accompanied by his wife, spent a week on the island. Their stay was facilitated by his brother-in-law who resides in Anguilla.
In thanking Mr Cameron for the gifts, Mr Guishard said the colourful cleats were highly appreciated and would be of much value to the footballers. He indicated that the Football Association was in need of various supplies and would readily accept donations of every kind towards the development of youngsters playing football.

“I am originally from Detroit, Michigan, where I was born and raised. I am the youngest of seven children and I grew up loving football and played it throughout my life,” Mr Cameron told The Anguillian in an interview. “I also fell in love with the opportunities that football provided me including getting into the University of Michigan on a scholarship to play for them – and a lot of other opportunities for my life.”
He continued: “I started my company with football boots because I saw a lot of my close personal friends not being able to play, and receive the same opportunities I had, because of cost prevention and not being able to have good quality boots to play [costing US$300.00]. I wanted to create that 300-hundred dollar pair of boots and offer it for a fraction of the price so that everybody can have that opportunity to have those high-quality boots.”DSC_0064

Mr Cameron, whose company is called “Just Play Soccer Cleats”, is delighted to have extended that opportunity and kindness to Anguillian youth. He added: “The reasoning behind the name is that my cleats are unbranded and do not have the logo of the company because the goal is to just play, and for a player to be his own brand rather than a kind of billboard of another company. The boots are just for them to play and enjoy the passion of football.”
Mr Cameron was grateful to Customs for allowing the free entry of the cleats through the port of arrival having understood that the supplies were gifts. He was also grateful to The Anguillian for directing him to the Football Association when he inquired by email about the appropriate organisation for his gift items.

The much-talked about After School Activity Programme, with which Anguilla is being assisted by the Guyana-based CARICOM Secretariat, was launched at Campus B of the Abena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School on Tuesday, February 4.
Acting Director of Sports, Rollins Richardson, spoke to teachers, students and media representatives about the programme at the brief launching ceremony. “Anguilla has been chosen as one of the pilot countries along with St Lucia and Grenada,” he said. “This is a programme geared towards providing after school activities for young people between the ages of 14-25 years … It came about because we believe, not only in Anguilla, but throughout the Caribbean and the rest of the world, that persons need to be involved in more physical activity as well as living better lifestyles. This programme is geared to persons who are not usually engaged in sporting activities of a competitive nature.”

Mr Rollins recalled that last July, Mrs Chanelle Petty Barrett, Permanent Secretary responsible for Sports, received correspondence from the CARICOM Secretariat seeking Anguilla’s approval to be one of the islands for the pilot programme. Following that, personnel from CARICOM visited Anguilla and held discussions with officials in the Ministry and Departments of Education, Youth, Culture and Sports. This was followed by a Trainers of Trainers workshop in which twenty-one persons were trained to conduct the programme. These persons work in the school system, the Island Harbour Care Centre and the Department of Youth and Culture.
Mr Richardson explained that the programme was aimed at providing fun and life-skills for the participants, and would include such activities like wind ball cricket, rounders and a new sport called road tennis. He pointed out that the participating students would have an opportunity to decide on the rules of the sport of their choice.

“We want to encourage you to sign up with Mr Nigel Linton, the Leader of the programme for Campus B, to join these activity sessions,” Mr Richardson told the students. “You will have the opportunity to engage in physical activities for at least one hour or an-hour-and-a-half after school twice weekly. We are working on transportation to take you home afterwards. We are encouraging you to become engaged in this after school programme so that you can improve your general health through physical activity. We hope that going forward we will have other life-skills that you will learn such as responsibility, integrity, honesty – and we can have a better school population and, in turn, a better Anguilla.”

Deputy Principal, Mrs Melsadis Fleming, said the school was honoured to be part of the CARICOM-initiated Caribbean-wide After School Activity Programme. She observed that Campus B had a very strong culture of sporting activities and that the programme would make that even stronger.

“We at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School endorse this programme and encourage you, our students, to make it part of your extra-curricular activities,” Mrs Fleming added. “As we build a better Anguilla, we are using this programme to help to change lives.”

Zarnel Hughes continues to make Anguilla Proud

KINGSTON College’s Zharnel Hughes, Calabar High’s Christopher Taylor and Kiara Grant of Alpha Academy shared the spotlight with some scintillating performances at the inaugural Alcor Windows and Doors Corporate Area Development Meet at the National Stadium yesterday.
Hughes, the Carifta and Pan Am Junior 100m champion of Anguilla, cruised to 20.80 seconds into a negative headwind of (-2.0mps) to be the fastest in the Class One 200m.
The powerful-looking Odane Bernard of Donald Quarrie High was second overall with 21.83 seconds, with KC’s Antonio Henry third quickest in 22.06.
Hughes, who trains with the Racers Track Club, got out of the blocks quickly from lane eight, ran the curve hard then cruised home with the minimum of fuss.
Hughes, who is expected to lead the charge for KC in the Class One sprints, missed the Gibson Relays as a precaution after feeling a little discomfort.
“It felt quite comfortable coming off the curve and entering the straight. I felt a little pinch in the hamstring, that’s why I was absent for Gibson. But as I came off the curve, it went away, so I just took my time and came in,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Hughes, who ran 10.36 at the Western Milo Relays a few weeks ago, said he cruised and was satisfied with his time three weeks before ISSA Boys’ and Girls’ Championships.
That’s the time I was going out for, so I am happy I got it and I am pleased with my run,” he added.

VICEROY ANGUILLA CULMINATES ONE YEAR OF SPORTING ACTIVITIES

Colleagues at Viceroy Anguilla had a day off from work to enjoy a series of fun-filled sporting activities – a culmination of such events over a period of one year.

The varied activities were held at the James Ronald Webster Park on Thursday, February 27. Some seven teams participated. They were the Hurricanes, Iquanas, Earth Tones, Warriors, Sand Sharks, Scorpions and Strikers.

Viceroy’s General Manager, Mr Richard Alexander, spoke to The Anguillian early during the various events which involved a number of the property’s colleagues across all of its departments.

“We have seven fraternities, each one having its own logo and its own lucky mascot,” he reported. “I happened to be part of the Hurricanes fraternity who are currently in the lead with thirty-eight points and our closest adversary is on thirty-six points.

“We have had competitions throughout the year. We had such events as domino, swimming and cycling competitions; and now we have this amazing Olympics sports day with twenty different tournaments. It is a great bonding exercise and everyone is having a fantastic time.

Mr Alexander was asked how the resort, in this somewhat busy period was able to find the time for a sports meet.

“Normally in a hotel environment you have competitions between one department and another – such as Food & Beverage versus Rooms, Housekeeping versus Engineering etc.,” he explained. “But we decided to mix everyone up so each fraternity has a wide diversity of representation from different departments.”

Mr Alexander continued: “The staff members are very competitive, and Anguillians are naturally great athletes, so this gives them an opportunity, an arena, to display their skills.

“It is a fairly unique thing. It reminds me of sports clubs when you have different houses and they compete against each other. But now that we initiated this in 2013, it will be ongoing every year – and each year there will be a new champion hopefully.”
The results of the event were as follows:
1st Place Hurricanes – 135
2nd Place Earth Tones – 115
3rd Place Golden Warriors – 93
4th Place Sandsharks– 71..

DSC_1148 DSC_1149 DSC_1153Now in its twentieth year, Ashley & Sons Road Race has grown into a considerably large sporting event from a mere single race in 1994.
The event, on Sunday, March 9, in the public road outside the family’s supermarket in The Valley, was a riot of colour as children, attired in the varied colours of their schools, participated in the sporting activities. They represented the six public Primary Schools, the privately-run Central Baptist Primary School and the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School.

As part of the anniversary observance, Ashley & Sons donated seven BM bicycles to the schools for use in the race. “Being the twentieth anniversary, we felt that we should do something very special to honour our father,” said Connie Brooks, speaking on behalf of the family. “It was truly visionary for him to have looked into the future and see how important this race would have been in the lives of the youths and to empower them to be all they can be. We feel honoured to be able to carry on our dad’s legacy and to empower our young people. If there is ever a time that we, as a nation, need to invest in our youngsters, it is now.”

Ms Brooks was presented with a plaque by Mrs Lorna Rogers, President of the Anguilla Amateur Athletic Association, as a token of appreciation to the family.

Mr Kenn Banks, Past President of the Association, recalled that the late Mr Brooks had readily agreed to sponsor the first road race when he was approached in 1994. He said when Brooks saw the enthusiasm of the young people, he undertook to continue to sponsor the annual event named after his business. “We therefore need to thank Mr Brooks for that dedication. He has started a legacy which we hope will continue far into the future,” Banks added.

Mr Haydn Hughes, Parliamentary Secretary responsible for sports, said the event was indicative of the contribution of the late businessmen to the Anguillian community as a whole. “We must commend Mr Brooks for the support he has given to the social development of the island and for the legacy he has left,” he stated. “We must also commend his children for carrying on that legacy. Just as he has supported us, I hope that support will be reciprocated and that we too will support his family and their business, Ashley & Sons Supermarket.”

The opening ceremony and the sporting event were chaired by Mrs Anita Ruan, Guidance Coordinator at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School.

Omololu International School (OIS) Sports Day 2014

Omololu Sports Day“And the winner is…!” instantly the thunderous cheers ceased and the wind became the only audible sound echoing above our heads.
Six hours prior to this moment giggles, chit-chats and laughter filled the air. Jubilant voices chorused songs of soon to be triumph around the school grounds; ‘We are Tigers, you’re goanna here us roar…. roooar…’, ‘Blue Eagles are fireworks.., we gonna show you what we’re worth….’ and “We got the eye of the White Wolves and you’re gonna here us howl…..” And the chants went on and on.
It was a beautiful day, the sun smiled at us in all its glory, reflecting the joy of the Orange Tigers, White Wolves and Blue Eagles, all eager competitors. Parents and teachers alike were all equally excited as the first race of the day set things in motion. The applauses, chants, the occasional rain drops, the broad smiles affixed on the faces made the day unforgettable. Visitors looked on puzzled, as ‘Houses’ cheered unconcerned of the color shirt or position of competitors.
It was amusing to see the older students tumbling down the lane in their Sacks. Their brains were as fast as their legs were in the 100m, 200m, 300m and 400m as they swiftly completed their Math and Literacy problems, before running to the finish line. But of all those goose bump, heart-pounding and eye smiling moments with the older students, nothing could compare to the treasured memories the Pre-K and K students left us with. Their Potato, Color, Bean-bag and Late-for-school races had spectators mesmerized and screaming from the side lines at the top of their lungs. Let’s not forget, Cricket-ball-throw and the Relays. Who could forget the relays? Those little feet blazing around the track, all eyes on the finish line? Parents and Teachers played their part by demonstrating in the Parents and Teacher races that they are not only ‘tellers’ but ‘doers’ as well, they practiced what they preached. Well done!
There was not one student who did not participate in at least two events because as ‘OMOLOLU’ states -we are children of God, we will not be defined by any man-made limitations. An awareness of pride saturates the atmosphere; everyone felt a sense of accomplishment: ‘I did it’, declares the expression on the faces.
Now here we are, among all the exquisite gems one must stand out. “The winner is”, “the winner is”, the announcer repeated for the third time, “….The winner is Orange Tigers with 396 points”. Again, the screams and the chants of victory echoed and further intensified the jubilant competitors. White Wolves followed behind with 392 points and Blue Eagles in third position with 388 points.
Now together, we celebrate our successes as individuals, as a school and as a family while Blue Eagles and White Wolves secretly awaits 2015 in the hope of claiming the number one spot this year captured by Orange Tigers.
Omololu International School firmly believes that every child is unique and full of potential and through its holistic program of academics, the arts, music, languages and sports; OIS aims to guide each child to achieve his or her personal best and grow into an open-minded, supportive, well-grounded global citizen. The JC Recreational Centre in South Hill would like to say a heartfelt thank-you to Doctor of Radiology and high-school basketball coach, Jason Davis MD, who volunteered his time between 21st – 29th March 2014 to give impromptu basketball clinics at the JC Recreational Centre – a registered Anguillian Non-profit Organisation. It was a week of positive skills development and cultural exchange between Anguillian and American youth.

Dr. Davis, of Bloomington Illinois, along with his two talented off-spring – son Eli, aged 14yrs, and daughter Lexi, aged 16 yrs – coached and encouraged (at times) over 20 Anguillian youth through rigorous basketball drills which added a new dimension to the practice and pick-up games that are conducted at the Centre on an ongoing basis. At the end of the week the Davis’ were presented with certificates of appreciation from the Director of the JC Recreational Centre, Jaine Rogers, for their contribution to youth development and also for their kind donation of basketballs and a ball pump.

Dr. Davis (also known as Coach Davis) said of the experience, “It was a rewarding time for us” and hoped it would be “…the first of many”.
The JCRC looks forward to more collaboration like this which helps to fulfill its Mission:
“To direct and harness children’s energies into positive channels, which include organised sports, fitness classes and tutoring sessions to facilitate and enhance their social development”.

The Glasgow Commonwealth Team, the BBC film crew, a number of bearers of the Queen’s Baton in Anguilla, and other invited guests, were hosted at a reception at Government House on Tuesday evening, March 31, by Her Excellency the Governor, Christina Scott.

In welcoming the visitors, the Governor commended the baton bearers for their willingness and patience. She also spoke about the excitement she had witnessed as she sailed around the coast from Road Bay to Island Harbour with some of them, or met them there.

President of the Anguilla Commonwealth Games Association, Kenn Banks, joined in thanking the baton bearers on Monday, and urged other persons to participate in the continued event on Tuesday.
Ms Fortuna Bellrose, Vice President of the Commonwealth Games for the Caribbean Region, was pleased with the general involvement of the people of Anguilla in the Queen’s Baton Relay, and thanked the Governor for her role in the planning of the event.

She also praised the members of the Anguilla Commonwealth Games Association for their work, as well as the members of her team who accompanied her to Anguilla.

Louis Rosa, the Team Leader from Glasgow, gave a description of the baton. Among other matters, he referred to a “secret” message which the Queen enclosed on a rolled parchment which she will read at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. He also spoke about a collection of gemstones in the head of the baton, one of which was to be presented to Anguilla, and all other countries, at the end of the tour of the baton.

Meanwhile, during the reception, Anguillian Sixth Form student, Jose Vanterpool, was given an opportunity to join others around the Commonwealth in registering his views for a seminar about issues facing young people and what Governments should do. The young leaders’ conference, as the event is called, will be held in Glasgow by the Royal Commonwealth Society a few weeks before the Commonwealth Games.

Mr Vanterpool told the media that he had written a challenge to Government leaders to reduce the increasing rate of unemployment in the various Commonwealth member countries, including Anguilla, and to promote social and economic development.

The reception also featured cultural presentations by the Mayoumba Folkloric Theatre whose performances – folk singing and dancing – were well received.

Anguillian fast-runner, Zharnel Hughes, has recorded another feat which has made the people of the island proud of him.

The 18-year-old sprinter, now in school in Jamaica, made headlines last weekend when he won the 100m race at the Jamaican Inter-Secondary Schools Boys and Girls Athletic Champions. He beat the record of 10.21 seconds previously held by Jamaican Sprinter Yohan Blake. Hughes, the Anguillian athlete, set a new record of 10.12 seconds.

The BBC sport reporter, Graham Fraser, stated on Monday, April 1, that Zharnel Hughes “who trains with Usain Bolt, could be one of the stars for Britain at the Olympic Games in the next few years.”

Fraser’s article continued: “Anguillians can compete at the Commonwealth Games and World Champions but, as a British Overseas Territory, athletes from the island are unable to enter the Olympics as Anguilla is not recognised by the International Olympic Committee.
“If Hughes wants to perform on the biggest stage of all, he may choose to follow in the footsteps of Shara Proctor – the British record long jumper – who decided to transfer her allegiance from Anguilla to Team GB in 2010.

“The prospect of representing Britain is certainly on Hughes’ mind as he prepares to compete in the 200m at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.”

The BBC reporter quoted Zharnel as saying: “It is something I always think about. I think that (competing for Great Britain) would be the best choice.”

Pink house is pleased that Aronel contributed 15 cases of water to its member for Sports Day. The decorated water bottles showing the pictures of both Mr. Silwood Connor and pink house winning contestants were done to highlight power players of the pink panthers. Christina Davis’ and Shaquan Davis’ photos were added to highlight students who exhibited perseverance and good sportsmanship to become the winners of the 2014 ALHCS fifth year pageant.

Mr Silwood Connor’s photo was for him to be remember as a power player who was devoted to the house and the wellbeing of the students.

Sil was a loving, compassionate, and caring individual. From the time he joined the staff, he said “ I’m pink all the way pink.” He loved Pink House as a student as well as when he joined the ALHCS Staff.

Sil gave his ALL to Pink House and his willingness to help with big and small tasks was remarkable. He specifically succeeded when brainstorming for an idea to motivate a large number of Pink House students to enter the Road Race. His commitment to Pink House ran very, very deep. He was an amazing person.

Five of Anguilla’s six participants in the 2014 CARIFTA Games in Martinique left the island on Thursday morning, for the French Territory, accompanied by two officials – Mrs Heather Richardson, Manager/Coach and Mr Winston Duncan, Coach. They will be joined in Martinique by Zharnel Hughes – the sixth member of the team – who is temporarily based in Jamaica where he is undergoing athletic training.

The CARIFTA Games are scheduled to take place from Saturday, April 19, to Monday, April 21. The full team from Anguilla (three female and three male athletes) comprises Artesha Richardson (400m); Rechelle Meade (high and long jumps); Jonicia Richardson (800m); Mauriel Carty (200m); Aiden Hazzard (400m and 800m); and Zharnel Hughes (100m and 200m).

President of the Anguilla Amateur Athletic Association, Ms Lorna Rogers, speaking at a press briefing on Monday, April 14, said the purpose of the briefing was to let the public know who the athletes, and those travelling with them, were. The parent of the athletes and members of the Athletic Association were also present.
Ms Rogers said this year there were more Anguillian athletes for the regional competition compared with last year. She was grateful to the coaches for ensuring that they were well trained to the expected qualified standard, and to the parents for their support.
“It is a regional competition and it happens to be the year for the Olympic trials as well as for the Youth Olympics later on – and the CARIFTA Games have been designated the trials for the Caribbean,” Mrs Rogers explained. “All the islands in the region will be coming with their A-teams, so we expect our Anguillian athletes to compete to the best of their ability.” The athletes at the press briefing, some of whom were at the CARIFTA Games before, joined her in promising to perform well and in expressing their excitement.

Funds for the participation of the team in the CARIFTA Games were provided by the Sports Department, the Anguilla Commonwealth Games Association and the Anguilla Amateur Athletic Federation – to which Ms Rogers expressed thanks.

The Anguilla Amateur Basketball Association officially started their regular league tournament on Thursday 10th April with their first set of games. The Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School’s Team was pleasantly outfitted in brand new maroon and Gold Uniforms sponsored by Mary’s Bakery. Usually wearing regular T-shirts among the other uniformed teams, the school’s team is now equally well dressed.
Mary’s Bakery was founded in 1968 by the already established professional photographer, seamstress, farmer, and baker Mary Rogers Petty. Mother of 9 she was a dedicated philanthropist, advisor and supporter to many in her community and Anguilla. Today, Mary’s Bakery remains one of the leading bakeries in Anguilla offering a wide assortment of sandwiches, cakes, pastries and food.
Mary’s eldest son and second nominated member of the House of Assembly, The Honourable Mr. Leroy Rogers said, “we have sponsored many teams in the past and though the financial climate on the island is fraught, our family remains committed to giving back to the youth of Anguilla and the communities that have supported Mary’s bakery for decades.” He also noted, “Mummy would be proud of this venture as she too was always giving back”.

The Management and staff of Mary’s Bakery wish the Spartans Team the best of luck this season.
